Haha! It sound like you may have come close to performing her method. It’s pretty straightforward and not difficult. The idea is to place a thin layer of water in whatever vessel you have, I/we use a standard 100mm glass Petri dish but any clear flat bottomed dish will do. The water freezes in three layers or stages; the first layer freezes on the surface of the glass, the second on the surface of the water and finally the liquid water in between the two layers freezes leaving a solid piece of ice. Veda’s technique utilizes the first layer to form which is on the surface of the dish. Once that layer freezes you pour off the remaining bulk water to reveal the crystallography. So, don’t put too much water in the dish and don’t freeze for too long, you almost always have bulk water to pour off.
