Bio | Actively Looking to Move Onto a Homestead
Hey y’all.. 54 year-old man here.. I’ve known since my mid-20’s that a homestead life is what I’m here on this planet in this life to do.. (It hasn’t always been an active goal by any means, but the past few years have put it into sharp focus, yes?).. And that’s why I joined this site – to find that opportunity and a door that can be opened.. I realized a couple years ago that for most of us Aspiring Homesteaders, land ownership is out of reach as individuals.. Therefore, pooling resources and co-ownership is how many of us will need to do it (among other avenues to land acquisition).. And I like to think that everyone can have a place, regardless of their wealth or resources, and we can work it out one way or another.. A group homestead in some sort of co-ownership is a relatively big move & commitment, yes.. And I’ve come to embrace the fact that a group in collaboration is potentially much more powerful and synergistic than going it alone.. In the meantime, I’m also open to, or looking for, an existing homestead, or land owner, or farmer, that wants to bring in others to build out a group homestead, or will do lease-to-own.. Or, someone who just needs help and more hands to get things done.. I have knowledge, experience, and skills, and consider myself a perpetual student.. As of July 2024, I am taking a course called Living the Off-Grid Dream to help refine my visions for a homestead and build business plans to take to existing landowners and/or investors..
Key points of my background, knowledge and skills, and interests: • Midwestern by birth, from outside a small town, surrounded by agriculture.. (Grew up on a defunct farm, though we were not farmers).. Barefoot and dirty was the ethos.. • University degree in engineering (though never worked in that particular field) – but solid mathematic and scientific understanding, and ability to figure shit out.. Deductive reasoning is my primary superpower.. • Other superpowers — resourcefulness, planning, ambition, independence, unconventional, a drive to total self-responsibility, love of cooperation and collaboration, no interest in controlling others or manipulating or giving dictates.. • Years of gardening experience (mostly ornamentals, but now learning edibles).. • Growing from seed and plant propagation are solid skills, so there’s potential to make that an income-generating endeavor.. I collect seeds and propagate plants like a madman — I really can’t not do it.. It’s my thing, creating and nurturing.. • Currently cultivating the craft of Electroculture, and will continue to do so, through scientific understanding and principles, as well as the real true science.. Soon as I’m out into an open garden again, I’m gonna go all in on it.. And this includes stone structures in the tradition of ancient megaliths.. I fully intend to build pyramids.. For years have had a vision of having an energy research effort/program on the homestead — Electroculture, harnessing useful electrical power as we know it, Biogeometry, etc. • Garden design and landscaping experience, which includes building hillside terraces with dry-stacked retaining walls.. Think rice paddies or Machu Picchu.. • High priority on a homestead for me is water catchment through swales and catchment ponds.. (Elaborate vision in my head of a hillside or sloped landscape that I/we carve out with an elaborate system of swales, channels, small tamped-down ponds, terraces, and fruit trees).. • Want to learn and implement cob building techniques, especially approaching it with the versatility of cob bricks.. • Big vision for a large chicken yard that is itself a self-contained, regenerating food forest.. • I have learned and cultivated the craft of food preservation through lacto-fermentation.. I don’t at all think that preserving enough food to get through the year is out of reach.. It’s the ways of the past.. Just give me a bucket of salt, an arsenal of jars, and a cool cellar for storage.. • Have always been interested in health matters and know a fair amount about natural/real health, including Western herbalism, for example.. I know how to make herbal tinctures.. I’ve gone fully 100% into the terrain paradigm, having given up the idea that “biology is a war”.. Everything is divinely-designed and self-correcting.. “Symptoms” are now “indicators”.. • Currently in the western Oregon rainforest, and open to moving just about anywhere, though would much prefer to stay west of the Rockies for the dry low-humidity summers.. (Western Oregon is fertile and the rainfall here offers opportunity for abundant water catchment).. • Not at all interested in the government or self-appointed authorities dictating what us stewards can do with the land.. • Looking for a group homestead or community that’s not an “intentional community” or “eco-village” based on rules, enforcement, and power struggles.. No authority, and no one in charge.. Principles of voluntary agreements and exchange between equals, only, without coercion or manipulation.. And no damn weekly meetings or reports or minutes or clipboards.. Lol.. I’ve been through the bullshit of typical communities, and it doesn’t work.. And yes, these are things we’ll be figuring out as we go, a work-in-progress.. That’s what I’m here to do — create a new way, not replicate the current one.. I’m most drawn to the organizing principle of kin’s settlements, where everyone or every family is independent and self-contained, gathered into “homestead neighborhoods” as I like to call it.. One piece of land can be divvied in this way..
Brevity isn’t my strong suit, so congratulations if you made it this far.. 🙂 Open-minded & nice guy here, so reach out if you feel so compelled.. Love ya! |
