I am a mom of 5 boys, who are currently attending a private school on a small island. My oldest is heading into eleventh grade (he is skipping a school year) and the school is pushing the university path. This child is very academic, and may end up going along this path, but I would like to have solid alternative options to present to him as well. I am interested in hearing from other parents who may already on this path to learn what options we might consider. Blessings to all.

Hi! I can 100% relate to your challenges. My 9yo was showing the same tendencies, and after learning more about dyslexia, I actually believe my 11yo and 7yo may have a less extreme case as well. I have recently completed the book “The Gift of Dyslexia” which provides hope that the retraining technique they explain may be successful. I have not yet begun the technique, so I cannot offer a success story, but you may find this to be a valuable path to explore.

I additionally have enjoyed the concepts presented in a (very dated) book called “The Language Crystal” as they relate to dyslexia.

One of the main concepts I have garnered from “Gift” is those affected by dyslexia are wired differently, and the dyslexia is “activated” by trying to school them to read too soon. If a child has the opportunity to teach himself to read prior to school, then they may never be affected with this infringement. In the case of my 9yo, I knew we started him in school too young. He was very much still existing in the astral plane, and I feel like putting him in school pulled him out of that plane way too soon. According to the book, once the child experiences the defeat of school, the dyslexia sets in. It can happen at any moment in early schooling, once they feel the correction of teachers/parents/etc.

“Language Crystal” is hard to get through because it was written in the 80s and has a lot of political commentary, but the early chapters explain a few things worth reading. I would love if someone were to pick up on the concepts within this book and rewrite it with a modern outlook, but so far in my search, I have not found a similar writing since.
