Hello! I have been using the silver hills sprouted bread since a couple of years. Recently I heard Barbara mention in one of her videos the company “simple kneads” and so I got their cinnamon raisin and pumpernickel breads to try. One of the ingredients if high oleic sunflower seed oil. Aren’t seed oil bad for us?

I’d love some clarification on exactly what “high oleic” means…. & how it was produced.

I have 2 great sources for organic, sprouted, natural sourdough breads (& many other products). Very simple ingredients, no oils at all:

High oleic is referring to the fatty acid content. High oleic means it contains at least 80% oleic acid aka monounsaturated/MUFA fat (similar to what is found in olive oil) which technically makes it healthier than standard sunflower oil which is higher in linoleic acid (aka polyunsaturated fat/PUFA) which is more inflammatory. I’m not sure the exact process they use to alter the PUFA/MUFA content, but it’s likely unatural.

      Thanks for the bread recommendations!

I love Berlin Bakery’s sprouted spelt sourdough which only contains 3 ingredients and no oils.

Yes seed oils are inflammatory and thus are not ideal for our health especially in the amounts consumed in our modern diets because they are found in pretty much every processed food and almost every meal you consume from restaurants. I personally would opt for a bread without it myself, but if you don’t eat out or consume any other forms of processed foods then having a small amount in your bread would likely be fine.
