One of the golden nuggets of Terrain that I learned through Adam and Josh Bigelsen was that the way wo/man views and interprets the process of nature can impact our perception of where we belong within the natural cycles of life. While Charles Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” theory suggested that natural changes are caused by genetic mutation and competition, his predecessor Jean-Babtiste Lamarck looked at nature and saw that change is conscious and continuous; and dynamic relational interactions create change as the needs of an organism are expressed in its environment. I got to see the microscopic evidence in the University of Terrain course as we witnessed some of the phases that life energy (endobiont) expresses in its changing environment in a process called pleomorphism.
Even more thrilling is in the everyday observations I make as I look through the lens of Lamarck’s presumptions: that all living systems move towards a state of balance and harmony, require consciousness to detect and carry out change, and that evolution has 3 phases: 1) parasitic (an organism requires a host to survive which stimulates adaptation), 2) adaptive (an organism gains independence, interacts and influences the environment), and 3) symbiosis (a life form achieves perfect balance with its environment, giving and receiving in perfect amounts).
Watching the cow’s body adapt to give birth and nurse her calf, seeing the alder trees decompose and become host to yummy oyster mushrooms, compost, soil, and everything that grows; I see this natural pattern in so many places and yearn to come into alignment with it not only in farm systems, but in all systems.
Seeing it in social situations is also bringing insight and joy into my life. In stark contrast to the storytelling rules of grade school (man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. himself), Terrain is guiding me towards hearing the harmonic symphony of life. It’s Life’s momentum; and if I’m unwilling to change to be in a symbiotic relationship with what’s true in my environment, then the Law of compensation will so lovingly give me a kick in the pants to get moving:).
Would anyone care to share their observations of how Terrain paradigm reveals itself in their life?
