Being a big math-music geek, I love what this guy does.. In this video, he records himself 15 different times striking different notes of an xylophone at different rates (obviously employing a metronome).. He says the difference in rates between each is a mere 0.2 bpm (beats per minute).. Very cool the different rhythmic subdivisions that emerge over the course of 5 minutes.. Also fun to watch the wave patterns in the motion of his hand(s) across the screen – at times, it’s a perfect sine wave.. Some trigonometry up in here.. Good stuff..

Tuba – I had a friend who was really into jazz back in the day and got me hooked on it. He played a Charlie Parker tune that was arranged for tuba. I can’t remember the name of the musician, but it almost defied the possible it was played so quickly and with musicality. At least that was my memory of it. I can’t for the life of me remember the musician’s name.

Ha!.. Speaking of defying the possible on the tuba — I was just thinking of this particular video I came across a few weeks ago.. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a tuba play this high (that I recall), and it helps that the notation is on the screen.. This is up in the upper euphonium range.. I couldn’t even begin to get up to that upper register, not even close — very difficult with the tuba mouthpiece being so large..

(Sorry for my previous reply placed in the wrong thread)

Great! I love musicianship combined with showmanship. The latter so frequently exceeds the former.

Oh yes, I love me some Peruvian/Inca music.. Now that’s a big gopher hole I could fall down looking on YT.. I remember what was essentially my introduction to such music — I was in Europe in the summer of 1995 and in the cities it wasn’t unusual to see Peruvian men playing on the street in ensembles including guitar, flutes, and percussion.. It was so rhythmic and soulful.. I was completely captivated!.. ?

I’m not necessarily drawn to metal music, and really not too familiar with it.. But the subject came back on my screen recently, and so I got out the one metal CD I do own and started listening again after several years — (“Immortalized” by Disturbed).. Fantastic collection of very meaningful songs, top to bottom.. And dang, David Draiman might be one of the best song writers and lyricists that’s ever lived.. Ha!.. My favorite song? — “The Light” .. To say this song encapsulated my view on and how I live my life is an understatement.. I found a video that features the lyrics.. Highly recommend giving it a go.. No worries, it’s not as sonically-harsh as you might think, given that it’s metal music.. Quite pleasing actually, and soothing to the soul.. The best part might be the reggae-esque bridge section.. Love it.. 🤠

Ya know, I was never a big fan of the original song, but I love Disturbed’s version. I prefer Disturbed’s older stuff but this cover is beautiful

I discovered this song, and Disturbed too, when the song was featured in the soundtrack of an episode of a TV show I really loved — “Into the Badlands”.. I was completely captivated.. Had a laptop at the time but rarely ever went online, but I did just to find this song (and actually, at the time, I had never used YouTube either, or much at all, as I wasn’t a big internet person).. Anyhoo, found the video, obsessed over it, and finally one day I went to the used media store down the street and bought a used copy of the “Immortalized” CD.. Fan-freakin’-tastic music.. Love all of it.. So, that’s all the Disturbed I really know.. Don’t know the older stuff..

But funny story about the day I bought the CD.. The night before I was at a friend’s place for my birthday celebration that year and I was hitting cocktails pretty hard — (turns out, found out later, I had put down a whole fifth of Gin, believe it or not).. Thankfully, my friend’s birthday gift to me was a cab ride home that night.. Lol.. Anyway, as much as I drank, I handled it pretty well — didn’t get sick, and woke up only slightly hungover.. Felt fine enough to walk in the summer heat, get this CD, and then listen on headphones.. But that’s when the “hangover” became apparent — the music at times was a bit much for my head, and got a bit headachey, and so I had to turn it off, and come back to it later.. In the end, I actually find the music to be quite harmonious and resonant for me, and not at all harsh, in the way of the stereotype of metal music.. David is a brilliant lyricist and songwriter.. I can tell he studied music theory and composition.. That’s so evident.. And I love singing along with him on the harmonics.. While “The Light” is my favorite, the harmonics in “The Vengeful One” are perfect for my voice..

Okay, that’s the treatise for today.. Back to the kitchen.. Lol.. Hey, Steven, good to see you.. hope you’re doing well, buddy.. I’m about to make a test batch of Oregon Grape berry jam.. Oh yeah, the report to come.. Lol.. 🤠

Also, meant to say — I too actually prefer Disturbed’s version of this song.. After I listened to it a thousand times, I went back to listen to the original, for comparison.. Grew up on the song, and we had the vinyl record in the house in the ’70s, and S&G’s music was ubiquitous back in the day.. but hadn’t listened to it, or heard it for decades, so the specifics I couldn’t remember.. I was surprised with how fast the tempo in the original is (kinda frenetic actually, as opposed to being relaxed), and Art Garfunkel’s extremely high tenor voice just didn’t do it for me.. Comparatively speaking, didn’t much like it at all.. But still, iconic, and back in the day, was a big big deal..

Had to share this.. maybe someone will dig this.. The Euphonium — my favorite musical instrument.. This piece is a good example of how this low-brass instrument can play notation usually reserved for the likes of flutes & clarinets.. It has a slow start, but picks up.. Fun fun fun to listen to..
