SonyaMemberFor kids (and grown-ups), if you’ve not seen it already, My Neighbour Totoro. Japanese wood spirits, organic veg, cat buses…..totally magical!

IfeOrganizerSweetness, I love miyazaki movies! Can you think of one that doesn’t have anything scary like at all? My son can’t handle any like close to death calls (so that rules out the Kiki’s delivery service) or like anything trying to hurt another thing. This one, I can’t remember…does it have anything even a little scary?

IfeOrganizerOk, my son watched it. 🙂 It was soooo sweet thank you again for sharing! he could totally relate to Mei’s experience chasing animals and laughing maniacally, he was even laughing maniacally watching her ? which isn’t his usual experience when he watches films. But he definitely had a suuuuper hard time when he thought Mei was dead. My lord, did I have to keep him close and affirm it would all be well! But it turned out with him calm and reflective on if he would’ve been able to be friends with Totoro even though he roared. lol. I’m excited to get back to our cabin in North Carolina after these holiday adventures and see if he takes a few steps deeper into exploring our backyard woods by himself. ??

KevMemberMy all-time favorite film, hands down.. From 1992 I believe.. A classic.. Put on the headphones for full musical effect, dim the lights & enjoy.. My favorite moment? — The snow monkey’s transcendent moment and introspection in the first 3 minutes.. Oh yeah…. ? ..(Movie is 1 hour 36 minutes long)..

SonyaMemberChristmas got in the way and I forgot about this thread! Oh my goodness @shepsumaat I’m so pleased your son loved it, it’s such a magical film. There are almost scary bits but I guess you’ve got to learn that scary isn’t always as scary as you think. I love knowing that a kid all that distance a way has found it too! And @KWayne I’ll give this a watch ?

hughMemberLove this movie and the potential symbolism behind it. This guy has restored my interest in movies. I had got to a point where I thought that it was all brainwashing nonsense, but this makes a lot of sense…and it’s fun.

KevMemberYou know, this is funny.. I’ve been thinking of this very thing a bit recently, the idea of going back and watching movies I’ve seen before (some years & years ago) and seeing better exactly what the messages and symbolism are in them.. my mindset morphed over the years, as it does for many of us; but I also got a keen eye for the language of symbolism.. Jumanji wasn’t a movie I necessarily raved about, was kinda indifferent about it, though I’ve watched it many times.. so would be cool to hone in on the symbols and characters and archetypes, and um, portal to other dimensions??.. lol.. But yeah, in Jumanji there were some things that “gave me a feeling”..
What other movies??.. hmm, too many to mention.. 😊 ..”Gremlins” ??..

hughMemberOnce I got an idea of what the underlying theme probably is, there are way too many similar ideas and symbols in these movies for it to be a coincidence. That makes going back and decoding them kinda fun.
Some movies/TV I’ve enjoyed recently:
– Don’t Look Up
– The Golden Compass
– Free Guy
– Ready Player One
– Under the Silver Lake
– 3 Body Problem
– Heroes/Reborn
– Godzilla-

KevMemberI haven’t seen Golden Compass, but just by the looks of it, that appears to be chock full of occulted symbolism.. Dunno, just seen cursory ads for it, years ago..
For some reason there’s a mini-series that’s popping into my head on this matter.. It’s called “Tin Man”, a SciFi channel original production and reimagining of The Wizard of Oz.. I got that on DVD actually, packed away somewhere.. It was lengthy at a full 6 hours I think.. The wicked witch and the crystal ball technology, and all that, and the dark & the light, conjuring a world of demons, and flying bat creatures that do drone surveillance for the witch, etc., blah blah — that might all be ripe for a look-see again.. And that was definitely about portals to other realities — that’s what tornadoes are!, portals.. Lol.. My favorite bit was Mystic Man (a reimagining of “the wizard”), played by Richard Dreyfuss.. He spent his time snuffing some sort of spice that got him high and able to channel messages and visions.. 😄

hughMemberCool, I’ll look into it. I heard that Wizard of Oz 2 was pretty creepy too.

KevMemberI found 2 follow-up movies.. “Journey Back to Oz” from 1972, which appears to have been animated.. Never heard of it, and apparently wasn’t ever on TV, as I’d’ve come across it at some point in those days.. But maybe it only ran on TV once, in 1972.. I was only 2 years old, so, missed it.. Lol..
Then in 1985 there was “Return to Oz”.. apparently, Lucas and Spielberg were involved.. I’d be interested to see that, just for how bad it’s said to have been.. Lol.. would be an interesting retrospective..
But also, something just came to mind: “The Dark Crystal” by Jim Henson.. A friend of mine back in 1999 insisted we get together to watch it, and he raved about it.. I’d never seen it, barely heard the title; I guess it was from the late ’80s maybe.. I was astonished by it.. The puppetry was next-level I recall.. Another one I’d love to see again.. Most def occulted symbolism in that, with the crystal magic, and wasn’t there some drinking-of-a-potion, in alignment with the sun, and summoning demons, or bringing on the darkness, or somesuch??.. Oh yeah, the Buzzards!!.. Lol..

hughMemberReturn to Oz is the one I was thinking of. I haven’t seen it, but it gets really dark from what I understand.
The Dark Crystal is fantastic. After I saw it, I couldn’t believe that I had never heard of it before. “End, beginning, it’s all the same,” haha.

KevMemberI don’t remember that line explicitly, but now I’m chomping at the bit to see it again!.. and memories are starting to jog.. wasn’t there some patriarchal buzzard (Head Buzzard in Charge) that had a deep, old, raspy voice??.. is he the one that said that line??.. Yes, must see this again..
🦅 <– (pretend this eagle is a buzzard).. lol
