    Hey guys!

Been surfing a lot + playing bball with my boys and this 45 year old body is starting to feel it more and more with the aches and pains haha

Wondering what others in here have found beneficial for recovery after a workout or strenuous athletic activity? I’ve found stretching to be key (and def need more help there!) + cold water submersion and also starting to mess around with DMSO for sore muscles and ozone as well for inflammation. Also been pretty happy with my AquaCure but still dealing with sore/tight left hip from surfing that doesn’t seem to want to go away! (hoping DMSO will help with that) Anyone else have some tips here or success with other modalities/remedies? Thanks!

Mike, when it comes to stretching, the most effective way to restore elasticity, increase ROM, redistribute and guide the lymphatic is with Active Isolated Stretching. The recipe is simple science; after two seconds of stretching, the fibers will tense up as a defense to being injured thus discomfort and pain. So, simply take any joint into its end range of most actively until you feel mild discomfort, then assist with your body weight, limbs, hands, or non stretch cord a bit further for 2 seconds, then release back to a rest. Repeat the exercise 5-10 times.

When one muscle contracts, the opposite can relax. Sherrington’s Law.

Each rep, you’re creating a pump for fresh blood and oxygen, you’re also effectively increasing your ROM without your nervous system getting in the way. https://www.stretchingusa.com/active-isolated-stretching/

Example: to stretch the hamstring, glute fibers.

Lay on your back. Bring your working leg up knee bent about 90 degrees, heel turned towards face, externally. You stretch this shape, don’t let your heel fall toward your chest during the exercise.

Now from a resting state, contract your hip flexors, quads, core and bring that working leg (with shape) towards your opposite ear, if you can reach place your same side hand over your knee, opposite hand over shin or ankle and gently assist further for 2 seconds only. Let go, leg comes back down straight. If you can’t reach yet, wrap a cord around your ankle, tug on it at the end ranfe of motion, then let it all come back down. Exhale contract, inhale return.

I’ll have my own videos here soon 😉

I get back pain from bending or sometimes even (too much) leaning forward. Have a history of about a half dozen back injuries since about 6 years old. Boiron homeopathics save the day for me over and over: Tellurium metallicum and Kali carbonicum. When they don’t do it, I apply a cannabis salve to the ouchy area. Always does the trick. (I’ve noticed that I have increased urination when I take the salve internally, for sleep, or even topically. Fascinating.)

Recently I’ve found less (no?) back pain if I point my knees outward as I bend down, or squat.

You may want to wait for the new line of AV Spagyric Salves that are already in process. The 1st 3 formulas have just completed the 1st 3 month herbal curing step and ready for the final blend into a salve after I calcinate the residual herbal matter. They’ll then be integrated into a mastic tree resin blend with other synergistic elements … these are unique in the entire industry as the Spagyric method unlocks the full herbal-mineral potential that will allow them to work more effectively as topicals for mm-connective tissue issues while simultaneously clearing the energetic underpinnings. Formula 1: MM/Connective tissue relief, Formula 2: Dermal issues & Formula 3: Contemplative enhancement with pineal-activating & CNS stimulation of neuro-transmitters conducive to meditative states, restful sleep & lucid dreaming. More formulas will be in production through the new year. BTW there are cannabis related spagyrics also to unlock the full medicinal potential beyond Simpsons oil, but those will be kept in the Private-Private.

I learned something a very long time ago that I am going to assume is one of the reasons that many have so many pains from just being.

It was when I was in a situation where the toilets were a hole in a cement floor.

I mention this not at all as a joke but it appears to be the first step towards hurting ourselves.

You must squat with you feet flat and your butt almost touching the ground. This is how I think we were designed and it sure appears sit up toilets are the first part of the journey to create illness.

I see old men and women in Asia who have no problems getting into that position.

It seems so simple yet here we are. I believe there are a litany of practices we do every day that are simply not the best practice for a human body.

There is no question I am an odd one and I get it but this is not one of those times.

It took me a long time to see what I believe is obvious to many. This event seems to has created a scenario, for me, where I had to change and adapt. I would not have otherwise. It has been an awakening unquestionably and the funny part is I thought I knew something. Well I did know something but it was the wrong something.

One of the tools I have used to rebuild my nervous system and body is called original strength. I’ll paste link. I got certified as a coach so if you have questions let me know.

It is a 10-15 min set of exercises I do every morning and night. It’s everything you did as a baby to build your nervous system. Starting w tongue behind front teeth and breathing through nose. Then you start with head movements. Lead w your eyes-always keep tongue on roof of mouth. Up down side to side. Then start reaching and rolling. Then start rocking. There are tons of dif ways to roll and rock. All mentioned in the Pressing Reset book by Tim Anderson. Then start crawling. Front to back side to side -do all of this while leading w eyes and tongue on roof of mouth

Your nervous system has to be tied together. It’s not just one set of muscles that need fixed. Once you rebuild-you will have a lot less post activity needs because you won’t be sore. A balanced nervous system will give you strength, stamina and flexibility.

Here’s the link. Lmk if you have ?’s.

I’d encourage everyone to check out the link you provided, and I look forward to any further elaboration you’d care to share and why you gravitated to this method. I actually found the Original Strength book at the library after I head Kelly Brogan mention that if you heal your nervous system, you can heal anything. So, I went to the library and checked out every book w the words Nervous System in it. What I love about Original Strength is that it is a quick read and every.single.day-I GET BETTER, STRONGER, SLEEP BETTER, ETC.

I had literally lost the ability to talk and walk because of a really hard trauma journey, being a life long type 1 diabetic (and all of the crappy things doctors said to me) and being tongue tied, I couldn’t breath or integrate anything that happened to me or dream at night to process, I only every learned how to survive. Both my parents were also addicts, so it was hard.

But-I am going to use my story to help heal others!!

About 10 years ago, I got plantar fasciitis and all podiatrists wanted to cut the fascia on my feet and two told me I could lose my feet. I tried physical therapy 17 times at different places for three years and wasn’t getting any better. One of the OSU football trainers heard my story and called me. He cleared his schedule and got me in the next day. After working with me, he asked “what happened to you as a kid?” He then said your feet issues and digestion issues have nothing to do w your diabetes, it all has to do with your breathing.

So-I have spent every day working on my tongue position, breathing, head control, rocking, rolling and crawling. I can walk now, I can talk, I can sit still, I can run, I sleep better, I dream now, I have joy now, I have relearned to smile and to talk. I am not actually rebuilding my body, although I look much stronger, I am REBUILDING MY BRAIN!!!

Feel free to reach out if anyone has questions about rebuilding your nervous system. I got trained 3 years ago in NC at the OS headquarters, not for a job, just to help me rebuild myself. I didn’t renew the certification, but I still have all of the knowledge:))

        @barre

        • #377789

Wow Amber, I am thrilled to read about how much OS has helped you. I also trained and got certified, about 5 years ago, but haven’t been practicing it much in recent years. You have inspired me to get back into it! Thank you.

Hey Mike, 57 year old life long hardcore surfer here. Still going strong–and surfing SF Ocean Beach (heavy). Not bragging, just giving context. For me, around 45 was when I started to suffer from surfing injuries/pain (and trying to keep up with my son). While stretching or other healing modalities are good, strength and conditioning is mandatory to prevent injuries/pain and maximize daily success.

The guy SurfStrengthCoach.com has some good programs (mostly paid though).

@<b tabindex=”-1″>elisesbodyshop is good to for daily programs on IG.

Pro surfers like Lakey have free surf specific workouts on YT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGkDDar6yDU

These have helped me. I do at least one of these 6 days a week—unless I am surfing that day. Wish you the best. Maybe one day I will catch a wave in the CC area.

Nice! Yeah I really like Kiel Russ and his Hydro Mind workouts which I am trying to do every day now. Funny you mention Lakey as she is a friend of Barre’s son and used to be on our unofficial pro team with our previous company before AV. She is super on point with her routine! Would be rad to catch some waves sometime! I’m just a super chill long boarder 🙂

Hey Mike! Thats an amazing connection with LP. She seems like a good human (not to mention good surfer). Her 30 min workout video is so good for me.

It would be awesome to surf together. Don’t know any other surfers who are out of the matrix/awake—well a couple but they are a little out of shape and cant keep up. ? I think I know where you surf, but afraid to name names/spots as don’t want to give away anything here. It is cold thats all I know. Maybe some day I see you in the water. ? best wishes.

      Hey Dave

Good to see other surfers here!!! I hear you about surfing injuries, but the best rehab is prevention. I had my clinic in Hawaii, and became the Doc to many of the iconic pros and waterman during those years. I’ll be sharing much in future discussion threads and training-practitioner on-line trainings.

I had to put my full-time surfing passion on hold during my athletic career in high school and college, as off-season training and regular season practice/games took precedence, while grad studies, med school etc. became all-consuming as well. I made up for lost time by raising my family in Fiji & Hawaii, so I could get my surfing priorities in order.

I began pushing my kids into waves when they were super young, and they grew up with local role models like Laird, Lopez etc while seeing other greats come & go from my clinic. To this day they share surf trips with Slater and others to exotic surf destinations including Kelly’s wave pool. So, point being … surfing has not just been a past time, but our entire family lifestyle and cultural context.

The martial arts filled my post-football void, and after years of practice I now realize it has been the most compatible companion to my surfing addiction, while being invaluable to both injury prevention and rehab techniques. So if you’re interested in surfing and martial arts as a natural unification for body-mind development with a good dose of pure stoke that every Soul deep-down craves … stay tuned!

Thanks Barre and Mike. I hear you and agree martial arts is great for surfing—and most anything else. I agree Slater and Hamilton are great examples of life long surfers who have done very well with the mind/body/fitness/health. For the type of surfing I do, and where I surf, I really need to maintain that strength/fitness component or I will get injured (and I wont even be able to paddle out ?). If you ever form a AV surf team trip to the slaters surf ranch let me know. Would love to ride that wave. ? Would be stoked to surf with like minded humans such as you guys! Anyway, love what you guys are doing and thank you again for sharing your knowledge. I will stay tuned.

Prior to moving to the islands I cut my teeth at Santa Cruz (outside Pleasures was my fav during big swellls), the Stinson-Bolinas lagoon where I grew up, and occasional sessions at Ocean Beach, which I still consider one of the gnarlier places to surf. Sharky & frigid NorCal waters are my roots, so I definitely relate! In the mid-70s to 81 my home was on Stinson Beach with full view of incoming swells, so I was patched in to the early AM NorCal radio surf to give the morning surf conditions. If there was an epic swell I’d typically report poor blown-out waves to reduce outsiders crashing our waves … haha!

Great discussion here. Thank you to @amber.lansford for the Original Strength recommendation. I will be checking that out soon. I’m going to break up my reply into a couple of parts.

I can add a couple of recommendations. By background, I’m 67, many years of martial arts – hard and soft – cycling, running, hiking, strength training. My biggest issue, realized very late in life, is over-training. I started to get palpitations before I realized how far down the hole I was. That was 10 years ago and I still have to be careful about over-doing.

    Mobility – I put together a 15 min video that is a combination of AIS, Dao Yin (Chinese Yoga) and Eye ‘yoga’. It’s free:- https://aethereahealth.vids.io/videos/4d9edcb41b1ce1c3c4/essential_stretching_1_01-mp4?vemail={!email}

It’s modular in orientation, starting with hips/legs, working into the shoulders and neck, then finishing with the eyes.

For aiding recovery, Arnica montana in homeopathic form, is extremely helpful. 30c is a good potency. It can be found in any health food store, and some pharmacies. It can be taken before a really hard workout, and then after.

For more chronic conditions, we (aetherea) make a product called Aches & Pains:

    https://aetherea.life/shop/tune-up/tune-up-aches-pains/

Our approach is similar to homeopathy, but is based on in->formation, using state-of-the-art radionic instruments and a team of spiritually oriented helpers.

Strength training – I have found Paul Wade’s Convict Conditioning extremely helpful.

    https://aetherea.life/strength-training/

Paul was an actual convict, and put his time to good use. His system is based on body weight training. You only need one piece of equipment – a pullup bar – for conditioning. His method is extremely well designed. Absolute beginners to hard-core training fanatics are very well served. Example – a starter pushup: Stand about arm’s length facing a door. Put your hands about shoulder height on the door, bend your arms, then push away from the door. Step 10 pushup? On one arm and one leg.

Yo Bro! Come on over and we’ll get you set up with a customized Somatics-Resistance stretching program. Stretching is vital, but it needs to be done with simultaneous strengthening of muscles through the full range of motion.

Stretching alone will be somewhat effective in removing tensions, but the stabilizers and opposing divisions will still limit ROM gains. Pure ROM gains also beget instabilities, while equal attention to tonification will allow greater stability and let the tighter muscles know that it’s okay to let go.

Since you’re relatively new to surfing I’d recommend doing 1-3 min horse stance intervals DAILY, which will build tremendous strength with ROM gains directly translatable to surfing. Bottom line, your hip pains are telling you to build a stronger foundation.

Tai Chi Ball training is my daily core exercise, as it demands that all movements originate from the core, while maintaining a modified horse stance throughout complex 3D ambulation. A simple wooden Tai Chi Ball allows the most complete & sophisticated training experience possible. I’d add clubbell sessions into the mix for added strength. Effective TC Ball exercise also couples mind-directed energy movement throughout for those interested in a less static qi gong oriented meditative practice.

Mastering movements from the inside out greatly eliminates musculo-skeletal stress, while nourishing the entire muscle-organ network being activated. Other than that, take advantage of our Affilliation with Mito Red Light and Haelo PEMF for extra post-workout relief.

Thanks for sharing the video!! I will try it tmrw after I do my morning workout. I LOVE convict conditioning. I have the book and got it during c19 when things closed. Was super helpful. I agree w Barre re stability equals mobility—that’s what we always say in original strength. There’s a theory under Bill Hartman (I-Fast) that if your nervous system is integrated correctly, stretching shouldn’t be needed. But I love the stretching for the meditative self care feeling I get. Thanks for posting. I looked at your site and supplements. They look great!!
