SherryParticipantHi Dr. Barre,
I was wondering what you might recommend for a cat who has been categorized as having stage two kidney disease. I have the pet C60, not sure if that taxes the kidneys in any way. Would cell salts be helpful considering he is An Aries sun (his opposite sign is Libra ruling the kidneys)? Any recommendations, remedies, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much,
Sherry

DouglasMemberI had a cat which was given the same diagnosis. He was 11 years old. <div>I was lucky to know a crazy Cat Vet who was against the System.
She prescribed (see details below)
1. Fluids
2. Chitosan or similar
3. Benazapril (it was a long time ago). One a day. I am not sure today I would do this.<div>—–
I gave him the fluids under his skin as needed. IE if he was not well one day he got water for a few days.
He was down for a few days but the Fluids perked him right up. I used to buy 1000 ml bags and 18 gauge needles and slip it under his skin. Put 50-100ml (depends on size). Only as needed. Depending on how he was doing. Often weeks with none. It would be a little ball of fluid under the skin and would quickly absorb.</div>

She prescribed Chitosan (Crushed Sea Shells Powder). Try this instead of Chitosan

SherryMemberDear Douglas,
Thank you so very much for your detailed response. I am going to look into your suggestions. How did your cat respond to that treatment?
I went to our local veterinarian and our cat stayed overnight in the hospital there. They ran every test possible. He was vomiting several times that day earlier. He had been labeled a stage two kidney disease previously by them. I hate to label at all. I knew that he needed fluids but I don’t know how to do that at home or know how to get the access to the equipment. I certainly would be willing if I knew how.
Once you take your pet to the vet they run every possible test under the sun. Our cat is an anxious cat there and I’m sure it was so much stress for him. I felt very badly about that.
Again I appreciate your thoughtful and detailed response.
Love and light to you
Sincerely,
Sheryl Cordivari

DouglasMemberHi Again Sherry,
I see I left out a point in my initial diatribe. I could not have been more long winded so why not take it further. Please be comfortable with any treatment you choose whether from some cat lover or an Allopath.
After you have a plan that rings true to you KNOW the outcome will be positive.
Have you given the fluids under the skin yet? The Website felinecrf.org can be quite insane so be wary but tons of info exists. I linked their page on giving fluids.
7 – 12 lb cat 50 mg was suggested
12-20 lb cat 100 mg. Obviously you can balance the quantity based on their weight. With Larry (17 lbs+) the bulge of fluid was about the size of a Plum or Lime. Over the next hour is is absorbed. (https://felinecrf.org/subcutaneous_fluids_giving_set.htm)You can easily see if she is dehydrated by pulling up her skin a bit. It goes right back down when well hydrated but stays in the fold if dehydrated.
The below products came up in a search as alternatives to Benazepril but I never used them and do not know the dosage so be wary before using.
Parsley Root Powder – Provides stimulation to kidney tissue and is a natural diuretic.
Marshmallow Root – Soothes mucous membranes ravaged by Feline Kidney Disease in the urinary tract and reduces inflammation.
–> https://blog.adoredbeast.com/the-benefits-of-marshmallow-root-for-dogs-and-cats/ <–I would love to hear Barre’s guidance.
While I have thankfully suggested and seen positive results several times over the years please be comfortable before doing anything I suggested.
God bless and I wish you the best.Doug
PS Jeez almost forgot. Cornell’s website regarding cats/dogs/jeez any living entity should be treated with the same reverence as HELL. No joke here. I guess they may have changed but I doubt it)
I see you savvy avoiding big pharma’s crap which Benazepril falls within.-

DouglasMemberSorry I am so late responding.<div>
He did fantastic. He lives to twenty years old after coming down with this at 11 years old.
Originally he was terribly ill and it was back when I was not as savvy with Doctors lets say. I took him to Animal Medical Center in Manhattan and the supposed head of the department saw him and I think started him on the fluids.
I emailed Dr. Hodgkin’s who I ran a Diabetic Cat Website for 15 years for and asked her advice.
She suggested the Benazapril and the crushed shells powder that I mentioned earlier.
I bet she would assist you if you email her. attorneydoc@gmail.com She seems to have a touch with cats.
The fluid brought him right back. There is a website that deals only with Feline
I never tested him again as he never saw the vet again.
When he was droopy I gave him fluids for several days once a day, I believe 100ml thought he was a big cat. Over 16 lbs. He was amazing though I had many cats live to twenty. I hope my current group gets to thirty as they had no vaccines.
I had diabetic cats that needed insulin sadly after trying food changes but being unable to successfully get them with healthy readings as they would be lethargic. I did follow Diabetes blood tests using their ear and Grey got two tests a day for nine years. He made it to twenty after finding the food I fed him caused diabetes. This is back in early 2000s. It was in the 90s I gave them crappy grain filled dry food.
I’m sure you have read all the cats are carnivores content. Elizabeth Hodgkins was the Vet that started that, bless her.
I wish you the best with him.

SherryMemberDear Douglas,
I cannot thank you enough for your detailed and most thoughtful response!!! I am such an animal lover and cats especially! Vin is doing well! He is eating and drinking normally and seems to have his normal energy level. He is currently eating what the vet recommended for a diet (Hill’s Science Diet Kidney Function early care). He seems to like it. I am not thrilled with the first ingredient being corn… but I realize the protein has to be of a lesser content. I giving him distilled analemma water wand stirred water in a water fountain that he loves. I pray for him every day without fail! So far no need for fluids. I am living in the moment. I am reading from the many helpful sites that you mentioned and will keep them as reference material going forward. Happy to hear that you have had effective treatments on hand for your cats. I am grateful to have found such a supportive community here.
Sincerely,
Sherry

DouglasMemberHi Sherry,
I am so glad he is doing well.
Forgive me but Hills food is terrible. You stated it has corn. Cats should never eat corn or any grains except what is in a mouses belly. Hills CD prescription food causes Diabetes in my cats and hundreds of Pet owners has similar horrible experiences.. It is garbage. I apologize but I says this from decades of experience. I managed a Diabeticcat website for 15 years. DON’T feed Hills was the first advice we gave.- Best choice is feed fresh raw that you make. Yes it is hard.
You can buy frozen Raw. OMAs is amazing quality and was the original — They have been doing this for a very long time and in my experience were reliable but that was twenty years ago. Start slow Do not believe the nonsense low protein is needed. It is bullshit https://omaspride.com/frozen-raw/ Still I get it Very tough. Plenty of alternatives. - Next choice is Freeze Dried Raw. This is one Brand and one flavor there are many choices.
https://www.amazon.com/Nuggets-Complete-Balanced-Healthy-Crafted/dp/B06XPVXJ7C/
You can feed it dry just be sure you leave plenty of fresh water. I use all of these foods. - Next is YES CRAZY Fancy Feast or Friskies but only Pate’ style.
ONLY Pate’ as it has no gravy and corn syrup.
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=friskies+Pate
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012KIBD0/
It is SHIT but I know plenty of cats lived past 20 eating this garbage. Compared to Hills it is Filet Mignon - Remember LOW protein IS BULLSHIT. Vets are Allopaths for pets.
- It is truly not what you want to use. All Hills prescription diets are garbage. The food is not why he improved as it is more in spite of the Food.
I do not say this off handedly. The idea that low protein helps CRF cats is nonsense but it sure sells products. It is the Hills Science Diet that I fed my cats that became diabetic in 2003.
Cornell Pet research and Hills are truly a dangerous path.
I assume they are still pushing the low protein diet. I had no idea this nonsense is still happening. It is the lack of protein that kills the cats.Corn is the first ingredient by itself is insane considering it is GMO corn. Glyphosphate is surely included.
https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/why-vets-recommend-hills-science-prescription-diet/
https://truthaboutpetfood.com/not-true-hills-science-diet/
If you want to hear it from a Vet, which I understand, please reach out the good Doc via the email I supplied earlier. Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins (attorneydoc@gmail.com)She is retired but always a kind heart. She worked for Hills for a few years and once she left she created several videos on why their prescription diets are truly garbage. She knows the business well and was the Government witness back when the Melamine scare from China in 2006
Keep doing what you are doing Except the horror Hills food. You don’t need tests to know how well he is doing. Look at him. Is he drinking water. Does he play. Is his coat shiny. Giving fluids occasionally IF NEEDED is so simple and those tests are taken while you cat is stressed and often the readings are skewed. (is that a word)
Yea I love Cats
Regards,
Doug-

SherryMemberHello Douglas,
Thank you once again for your insight! It is quite clear that you have experience here. It is so amazing that you have cats that have thrived so long under your care. Actually, much of this is commonsense (not in reference to your advice) to the situation. The medical field seems to complicate things. It is a business as well. There are some very well-meaning vets as well as doctors. I do see beyond that now. It is always the fear that drives us to make decisions that we would not have made in retrospect.
These days everyone seems to be an expert on all topics and I now realize that we must try things on our own to see what works best for us and follow our gut instincts about who to listen to and that is what brought me to Alfavedic. I do not believe in coincidences.
My first gut instinct when I read the label seeing that the most prominent ingredient was corn the alarm bell went off. I am aware of glyphosphate poisoning and this disturbed me greatly. I do feel that in breaking down meat the body does have to work harder-not trying to refer to a specific food camp to be in. I do not eat meat but I do eat my own quail and chicken eggs and much of the food I grow. I realize that cats are carnivores. I just want Vin to thrive. I know that food is only part of the equation. I think the key to animal health follows much of the same pattern as human health.
I will keep searching and trying to do my best for him. I did order the freeze-dried food you recommended from amazon and we will see what happens.
It is truly a journey and I appreciate you taking the time to care and communicate.
Most Sincerely,
Sherry and Vin

PennyMemberSherry, I cannot edit my post on AV but I should say that I only use it on the fur a couple drops a day as it contains brandy, but perhaps don’t use this bach flower remedy at all as Douglas has concerns and is well experienced in kidney cat issues.
