Antibiotics for parasites

I’ve had gut issues for a long time and had a GI-Map stool analysis recently that showed the presence of Blastocystis hominis, as well as some “opportunistic/overgrowth microbes” like Pseudomonas spp., and low secretory IgA. No indication of anything else like leaky gut or signs of colon issues etc.

The functional med doctor I’ve been working with suggested antibiotics for the parasite but was open to me trying their suggested supplements/probiotics/herbal antiparasitics (Copticlear and CandiBactan) first. All that seemed to work for about ten days (main issue of diarrhea resolved) and then suddenly stopped working.

I am leaning toward the antibiotics now, as this has become a severe issue and the doctor states the antibiotics will take care of it.

In the AV telegram group, people speak highly of Dr. Klinghardt, who speaks very highly of antibiotics [specifically Alinia (nitazoxanide)] to deal with parasites.

Just hoping for some reassurance that taking antibiotics is not the worst decision I can make and I should avoid it at all costs. I am unsure what to do if that is the case and not sure how much longer I can sustainably barely eat and continuously have diarrhea.

    Thank you-

Hi Marcus. I am a physician and have prescribed Alinia for almost 20 years now. It is technically an anti-parasitic medicine and is one of the safest medicines. I have had tremendous success with Alinia and for something like Blastocystis, it is something I would consider as first line therapy. It does not seem to interfere with gut microbiome balance. My advice is to ask your doctor about high dose Alinia use. The “regular” dose is 500mg twice a day and I have found way better results using 1000mg twice a day for a cycle of 2 weeks on/ 2 weeks off for a few cycles. It does turn the skin/bodily fluids/whites of the eyes yellow/orange. This is due to a metabolite of the medicine, NOT because it is causing any type of jaundice.

Oregano oil has been shown to be effective against this parasite. Btw die off can make one feel pretty bad. Fulvic can help.

    Food allergies? Stress?

Thanks a lot, I will look into that. It’s hard to know what’s going on with food allergies at the moment because of the effects of the parasite. I am planning on very carefully reintroducing things once that’s taken care of.
